The opening sequence gives the
audience a glimpse of the tale is only just starting to unfold. Its starts off
with wit the emotional emphasis of the years of marriage, and the gradual death
of Ellie. Ellie is dead and the
grief-ravaged Carl just wants to be left alone. Life has other plans. When
greedy property developers try to force him from his home he devises a cunning
plan.
Gathering hundreds of
multi-coloured, helium-filled balloons together, he attaches them to his house
and soars into the sky bound for Paradise Falls, the South American spot that
he always intended to visit with Ellie. What he doesn’t realise is that there is a stowaway on board in the shape of tubby, excitable boy scout Russell (Jordan Nagai) who has gone above and beyond the call of duty to earn his “Assist The Elderly” badge.
Russell is a vision of
wide-eyed innocence in sharp contrast to Carl’s weary sourness. The real
adventure has begun.
If the initial half of Up
sounds quite serious and sad, then don’t be put off as the second half is
fun-filled, fast-moving and leans towards the more conventional side of
animated features. It uses lots of positive music to begin with to show the
posativitiy of the couple and how happy they were. The lighting is bright and
the shot is filled with many colours, such as green grass and a bright yellow
sunshine.
They also have close up shots
of the couple, This shows their emotion of looking at one and other and how
strong theier romance bond is.There is no talking in the opening sequence just
music, this gives the impression of happiness to the viewer. As the clip goes
along you can see the copupe gradually get older. The music slows down
dramaticially to show this effect.
Towards the end of the clip when
ellie starts to become very ill, the lighting gets alot darker and the music
becomes alot slower, this is to show the response of a negative vibe and how sad
the situation is.
