Target audience

Deciding on a target audience is an extremely important  point when making a film. This is because it  can increase the possibility of how successful the film would be, so it is very important that we get the right  research into what our target audience want from our film. We have decided that our company would be a global multinational company. It could be a part in a media conglomerate
This is an audio that explains what target audiences we chose:

Opening sequence of UP

The opening sequence gives the audience a glimpse of the tale is only just starting to unfold. Its starts off with wit the emotional emphasis of the years of marriage, and the gradual death of Ellie. Ellie  is dead and the grief-ravaged Carl just wants to be left alone. Life has other plans. When greedy property developers try to force him from his home he devises a cunning plan.
Gathering hundreds of multi-coloured, helium-filled balloons together, he attaches them to his house and soars into the sky bound for Paradise Falls, the South American spot that he always intended to visit with Ellie.

What he doesn’t realise is that there is a stowaway on board in the shape of tubby, excitable boy scout Russell (Jordan Nagai) who has gone above and beyond the call of duty to earn his “Assist The Elderly” badge.

Russell is a vision of wide-eyed innocence in sharp contrast to Carl’s weary sourness. The real adventure has begun.

If the initial half of Up sounds quite serious and sad, then don’t be put off as the second half is fun-filled, fast-moving and leans towards the more conventional side of animated features. It uses lots of positive music to begin with to show the posativitiy of the couple and how happy they were. The lighting is bright and the shot is filled with many colours, such as green grass and a bright yellow sunshine.

They also have close up shots of the couple, This shows their emotion of looking at one and other and how strong theier romance bond is.There is no talking in the opening sequence just music, this gives the impression of happiness to the viewer. As the clip goes along you can see the copupe gradually get older. The music slows down dramaticially to show this effect.

Towards the end of the clip when ellie starts to become very ill, the lighting gets alot darker and the music becomes alot slower, this is to show the response of a negative vibe and how sad the situation is.

The Bourne Supremacy opening sequence

The mise en scene starts with bright neon bar lights in a dark streets and corridors. Already the audience are engaged in as it keeps them at the edge of their seats. The audience also notice the rainy atmosphere, that gives a sense of being lost and vulnerable. It is then made evident to the audience that the film is set in an exotic place like India. Props are used e.g. pills that the character takes as painkillers for headaches.

Shots and angles:
There are many types of shots and angles used in this opening sequence. At the start there is lots of close ups of the character to represent emotion, this then encourages the audience to get involved. There is a flashback at the start, with midshots showing the character's past and gives the audience an insight of what might has happened. The flashback also creates enigma codes to the audience.
Eventhough there isn't much sound used, the ones used are very effective. For example there is blurred sounds when the character is dreaming about his past. This makes the sound distant and makes the audience feel how the character is far away and his past will not come back.
Another non diagetic sound is used is the programmed sound, when the character wakes up. As this symbolise that the film will be set in the future.  The rest of sound is dialogue and is diagetic and has not been edited out.
There has been some editing done e.g. at the end of the nightmare, where there has been lots of quick cuts to match the fast paced film. This has matched the mood and atmosphere of the film, creating a thrilling affect towards audience.

AS Preliminary Task

AS Preliminary Task

The first shot was match on action shot, where we cut form one shot to another to show that it matches the first shot. When opening the door, we took two shots one from behind the person opening; following her and then filming another shot where her face was seen. This editing technique creates continuity and realism, rather than matching two separate shots.Problems that faced us during this shot were not fully understanding where the camera, at the end we have concluded that it will be taken into two shots. One where the camera is following the girl from the back and the second shot where the camera shows the girl opening the door and the audience are able to see her face.

The other shot that was created was a shot reverse shot, as it is a continually editing technique that is used when people are in a conversation. This can be seen in the video above, as when the two girls are talking to each other, it shows what the girls are looking at. Then a reverse angle shot is filmed to the other character to show conversation. Problems that faced us, were trying not to move as much to create consistency. We have filmed this particular shots a couple of times to get the best results of a shot reverse shot of the two girls talking.

A shot reverse shot is then followed by 180 degree rule, the purpose is to not distorting the audience sense of location and produce a continued shot. The 180 degree rule is when participants in a scene must have the same right-left relationship to each other. The camera should remain the same side of an imaginary line. Breaking the rule could result in confusion and  losing focus towards audience. We tried as much as possible to not break the rule or otherwise it would create confusion.

Heba's moodboard

Horror moodboard
This is my mood board displaying the images the I chose and inspired me. I have made it from using microsoft word. I have changed the colour and effects to edit the pictures in order to make unique.

Opening sequence of The Dark Knight

In the opening sequence of the film there is gunfire and there is crime committed everywhere, for example there is breaking and entering and it shows that they are attempting to rob a bank. The so called robbers are all wearing clown masks to keep their identity hidden; this is very common in thriller films.

The sounds that are used are sounds of glass breaking to show that there is danger in what they are doing and it also adds to the chaos there is. In addition there is also a sound of a gunshot to show extreme exaggeration so that when the audience is watching the sound will be emphasised.

The people in the bank are screaming when they realise that they will become hostages in a bank robbery. Their screams show the audience that they are terrified and unsure at what they should do as from looking at their faces you can see that they do not look ready or expecting the robbery at all.

They use sound affects to show the feeling of urgency as the sound gets quicker and starts to build up on itself.

The first opening scene is with title screens from both Legendary Pictures, Warner Brothers. The screen in the background is blue flashing lights. Also they have shots of a women’s eye and a man in a mask all like they were in a magazine. Then there was also smoke that turned into the shadow of the symbol of bat man.

Camera shots that were used are establishing shots, when they zoom in on the glass that the bank robbers smash. There is also an aerial shot  when you see the two men in clown masks going on a zip wire from one building to another, this shot is used to show the danger that they are putting themselves in and it also builds a tension to see if they will fall or not.

All of the clowns have guns which show danger. However clowns are linked in with childhood toys to contrast each other.

Opening sequence of Forrest Gump

The opening sequence of Forrest Gump follows a feather floating around the town. Wide shots are used in the opening sequence to show the feather travelling all around the town. The camera pans and tilts according to the movement of the feather. The feather is the main prop used in the mise en scene of the opening scene, as it is the main focus. The feather is a white colour which connotes with innocence and purity. It can also represent fate and freedom because it can land anywhere, in this case near the character’s feet. Other props are used to emphasise the scene e.g. Forrest’s suitcase, where is contains things like children’s books. Which can also resemble innocence but also a new life. There is a close up on Forrest Gump dirty shoes, with the feather near his right shoe. This is juxtaposes with the tidy suitcase, that contains toothpaste, clothes etc.

Lighting used is natural and no artificial lighting is used to make the dull, cloudy sky evident, as there is no sun rising or appearing, which indicates a sad atmosphere. However, as the music starts the light gets brighter which indicates hope. The natural light links in to the idea that the opening sequence is set in an ordinary place in a typical town.
The whole opening sequence is one single shot meaning that the camera angle doesn't change much till the bus arrives at the bus stop. The feather has been edited in and out of the scene, as the  feather that was followed by the camera is different from the feather that landed on Forrest's foot. This editing allows audience to focus on the representation of the feather in this scene. The genre is likely to be a romance, due to the soft, romantic music used.

Opening sequence of Seven

 Opening Sequence
Seven titles is one of the most innovative opening sequence in terms of title design and editing. The opening sequence doesn't contain any long shots, so the audience would assume that the opening sequence is taking place is someone's home, work place or indoors. The setting of the shot expresses how tension the atmosphere is to the audiences. The mise en scene is   emphasised by the use of props. Props  e.g. pens, files, highlighters, books are used to show how the scene is associated with detective and criminal work. It vaguely appears that the character is putting important papers to a file or a case study. All the objects are shown close to each other, which takes most of the camera frame, by this way it creates enigma codes to the audience, as the can't see any features of the characters' face e.g. who is creating this file and why? what is it about?. The suspicion of the opening sequence  is emphasised by the use of lighting. The lighting is low key lighting and creates a gloomy, dull and dangerous atmosphere to the audience. Most of the photos are in black and white which connotes the dullness of the scene, red is also used in the photos to connote anger, danger and suspicion.

Camera angles are used to significance the queer-looking of the opening scene. For example the main type of shot is close up shots, where the audience only focus and notice what is going on with the objects. This causes them to forget who is the character that doing these actions by using props like books, pens etc. There is no mid shots or long shots, therefore the identity of the character or location where all these actions are taken place, are not relived to the audience. Due to the focusing of the objects used, there is no panning or tilting of the camera, making camera shots still.

Editing is used a lot in this opening sequence to stress the suspicious and tense of this opening sequence. Special effects where used e.g. slow motion to go with the sombre tone, which allowed audience to clearly see what's going on with the objects. Non diegetic sound is used as slow paced music, which makes the scene more evident. It is evident that the film would be tense as the music get at a faster pace towards the end of the film, which creates a mystery. Montage is used to create the sense of urgency as lots of different shots of props and actions are put together.

The titles of the film actors, producers, directors etc are in hand writing format, which fits in the film as it creates importance to what the character is doing. In addition to the titles are in white, which makes it stand out.
